  한국펄프종이공학회는 1967년 설립 이후, 대한민국 펄프·제지 산업의 발전을 위해 학계와 산업계가 함께 협력해 온 국내 유일의 전문 학술단체입니다. 이러한 전통과 기반 위에서, 저는 제28대와 제29대 회장에 이어 금번 제30대 회장의 중책을 다시 맡게 되었습니다. 세 번째 연임이라는 막중한 책임을 깊이 인식하며, 학회와 산업의 지속적인 발전을 위해 더욱 무거운 사명감을 가지고 임하겠습니다.

  현재 우리는 그 어느 때보다도 급변하는 산업 환경에 직면해 있습니다. 중동 지역의 갈등과 에너지 위기로 인한 원가 상승, 글로벌 공급망 불안정에 따른 수출입 물류비 증가 등은 국내 펄프·제지 산업에 큰 부담으로 작용하고 있습니다. 이러한 대외 환경 변화에 효과적으로 대응하기 위해서는 과학적이고 합리적인 기술 혁신과 산업 전략이 필수적입니다. 이와 같은 상황에서 펄프·종이는 단순한 전통 소재를 넘어, 미래 친환경 산업의 핵심 소재로 새롭게 주목받고 있습니다. 특히 전 세계적으로 탈플라스틱(Plastic-free) 흐름이 가속화되는 가운데, 재생 가능하고 생분해가 가능한 펄프 기반 소재는 자원 소비의 선순환을 완성하는 순환경제(Circular Economy) 구현을 위한 가장 현실적이고 지속가능한 대안으로 자리매김하고 있습니다.

  따라서 우리 학회는 다음과 같은 역할을 더욱 강화해 나가고자 합니다.

첫째, 펄프·종이 기반 친환경 소재 및 기능성 소재 개발을 선도하는 학술 플랫폼으로서의 역할을 확대하겠습니다. 기존의 인쇄·포장 중심에서 나아가, 고부가가치 소재 및 첨단 응용 분야로의 연구개발을 적극 지원하겠습니다.

둘째, 산학연 협력 강화를 통한 실질적인 산업 경쟁력 제고에 기여하겠습니다. 연구 결과가 현장에 신속하게 적용되고, 산업의 요구가 다시 연구로 연결되는 선순환 구조를 구축하는 데에 더욱 힘쓰겠습니다.

셋째, 글로벌 위기에 대응하는 기술적 해법과 정책적 대응 방향을 제시하는 학회가 되겠습니다. 에너지 절감, 원료 다변화, 공정 효율화 등 산업의 지속가능성을 확보하기 위한 실질적인 해결책을 제시하겠습니다.

넷째, 국민과 사회에 종이의 친환경적 가치와 중요성을 널리 알리는 역할을 강화하겠습니다. 펄프·종이는 결코 환경을 훼손하는 산업이 아니라, 오히려 탄소중립과 순환경제 실현에 기여하는 산업이라는 인식을 확산시켜 나가겠습니다.

  앞으로 한국펄프종이공학회는 단순한 학술단체를 넘어, 국내 펄프·제지 산업의 미래를 설계하고 방향을 제시하는 핵심 플랫폼으로 자리매김해야 합니다. 저를 포함한 임원진 모두는 학회의 본연의 역할을 충실히 수행함과 동시에, 새로운 시대가 요구하는 변화와 혁신을 선도하는 데 최선을 다하겠습니다.

Korea Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry.

  Since its establishment in 1967, the Korea Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry has been the nation’s only professional academic organization that brings together academia and industry to advance Korea’s pulp and paper sector.

  Building upon this long-standing foundation, I have once again been entrusted with the responsibility of serving as President, following my terms as the 28th and 29th President. Fully aware of the weight of this third consecutive term, I accept this role with a deep sense of responsibility and a renewed commitment to the continued growth of both our Association and the industry.

  Today, we face an increasingly complex, rapidly changing industrial environment. Rising energy costs driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, along with escalating logistics expenses from global supply chain disruptions, are placing significant burdens on the domestic pulp and paper industry. To respond effectively to these challenges, scientific innovation and rational, forward-looking strategies are more essential than ever.

  In this context, pulp and paper are no longer merely traditional materials; they are emerging as key sustainable resources for the future. In particular, as the global shift toward a plastic-free society accelerates, pulp-based materials—renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable—are gaining recognition as the most practical and sustainable alternatives for realizing a circular economy that completes the virtuous cycle of resource consumption.

  Accordingly, our Association will further strengthen its role in the following areas:

First, we will expand our role as a leading academic platform for the development of eco-friendly, high-performance pulp- and paper-based materials. We will actively support research and innovation that extends beyond traditional printing and packaging into high-value-added and advanced applications.

Second, we will enhance industry–academia collaboration to strengthen practical industrial competitiveness. We are committed to fostering a virtuous cycle in which research outcomes are swiftly implemented in the field, and industrial needs continuously inform academic research.

Third, we will serve as a platform for presenting technological solutions and strategic directions to address global challenges. We will focus on providing actionable solutions for sustainability, including energy efficiency, raw material diversification, and process optimization.

Fourth, we will actively promote public awareness of the environmental value of pulp and paper. We will work to ensure that society recognizes our industry not as one that harms the environment, but as one that contributes to carbon neutrality and a circular economy.

  Moving forward, our Association must evolve beyond a traditional academic body to become a central platform that shapes the future of Korea’s pulp and paper industry. Together with our executive members, I will dedicate my utmost efforts not only to fulfilling our Association's fundamental mission but also to leading the innovation and transformation required in this new era.
